What to Do When the Muse Goes on Strike

So, I finished up some revisions and started looking at some other projects in various stages of progress with the intent of figuring out all that was wrong with them and making it right.

But it didn't work.

I thought. I brainstormed. I sat with my fingers on the keyboard.

Nothing.

So here are a few things to do while you wait for the muse to get to work.

1. Find a spot to sit and watch the flowers grow.

2. Crochet some juggling balls and learn to juggle.

3. Enjoy a bit of wine.

4. Bake some bread.

5....
You know what. No number five. I'm lying to you. You can't wait for the muse to strike, you have to go and hunt it down and make it work for you. If you wait you'll keep waiting.

(Of course if you do the above you'll be relaxed and well-fed and maybe the muse will creep back in on its own.)

So, what do you do when the thoughts are jumbled and won't come?

  1. I sure wish I knew the answer to that. I used to think my muse was on hiatus. Now I think he might have died. EEK

  2. You need to resurrect your muse! Perhaps he/she can be tempted with ice cream. It's worth a try.

  3. LOL. Ice cream would do it for my muse. I usually just keep on, even t.hough my muse has taken a holiday. She'll return and I'lll be ready

  4. That's the way, Beverly, to be ready when the muse does show up!

  5. I just don't have a muse so I'm all on my own and when I need to write, I just jump in like Beverly does. I need to find some kind of trigger to get back to the story I started several months ago. Maybe I'll just write some scenes and try to piece them together - thanks for posting this, Christine. See you all in the postings - E :)

  6. My muse likes music. Are those root words related??? My muse is a trickster, too, and shows up at the darnedest times (like showing me a whole scene complete with dialogue while I'm trying to drive.) We have a quirky relationship, but music will usually get her talking to me again.
